I was born in Massachusetts, but quickly left, only to spend my childhood in its redheaded stepchild, Rhode Island. I constantly interacted with this landscape on long drives to New Hampshire. When setting course, we would always have to choose: go around Boston on 495 or straight through the big dig. Without the GPS, each option brought either mild inconvenience or hours of terrible traffic. I never actually understood this cartography until I drew this map, and pieced together the long web of randomly numbered routes from Provincetown to The Berkshires.
